What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
A KNWN glossary definition of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) in the context of AI visibility, search and brand discovery.
Definition
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is an industry label for making accurate answers easy to discover and interpret in search and answer interfaces. It is not a universal platform standard or a guaranteed placement method.
Why it matters
AEO work usually overlaps with established SEO: crawlable pages, clear task-focused content, source quality, canonical consistency and measurement. Google says no special additional optimization is required for its AI features. See Google's guidance.
Example
A policy page answers who is eligible, the effective date, exceptions and the authoritative contact. The team tracks search performance and separately records whether supported answer products cite it. Clear structure creates eligibility, not a guarantee.
Common misconceptions
- AEO replaces SEO.
- FAQ markup guarantees selection.
- One answer observation is a ranking.
- Every answer product uses the same sources.
Interpretation note
Definitions describe terminology; they do not establish an official ranking factor or guarantee an outcome. Confirm platform-specific terminology against primary documentation.
